PLASTIC-PLASTIC-PLASTIC (2020)

The current state of plastic consumption is in overload, hence the option to keep trash in an environmentally correct way is impossible. In our fast-paced consumer environment, people can easily replace their necessities when no longer needed. As a result, more than 10 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year. Sustainable practice is no longer optional for society.

This collection shows my childhood memories of the beauty and purity of sea creatures, and the effect pollution has had on them. My usage of shells and pearls represents the emotional connection between memory and current life. My exploration of jewelry as a personal medium provides viewers with a door to contemplate the various problems with plastic.

Throughout the studio practice, I sincerely bring my affection for the ocean and my need to protect it into my work by using materials that have relationships to various bodies of water. This reflects on my beautiful memories of childhood in Tongyeong.

Responsible Aspects

We are living in the Plastisphere world. Every day, every people use plastic, and this means everyone should have responsibilities for this human-made plastic environment.

For planet earth, recycling is very important. Plastic waste has a great negative impact on the environment. Recycling reduces pollution caused by waste and reduces the need to harvest new raw materials, save energy, lessen greenhouse gas emissions, and so on. In addition, recycling has a positive impact on water and air.

Using plastic waste as the main ornament in my surrounding places, such as my school, room, and friends’ houses, gives numerous possibilities and directions to how we should start acting responsibly towards our nature. My process of forming the plastic and setting the pearls and electric forming represents the creativity of how I mimic the contemporary problems in our ocean and thereby raise awareness.

The ocean pollution from plastic waste is serious. Not only visible garbage but also invisible micro-plastic is impacting the ocean creatures and the environment. My concern about the ocean environment is the starting point of this project. The recycling plastic collection emphasizes cognitive dissonance between nature and plastic, which evokes more meaning when it becomes jewelry communicating with the human body.
